Freshdesk’s free plan is gone. Its pricing page now shows Growth at $19 per agent a month and Pro at $55, both billed annually.
That is the same $19 and $55 Zendesk charges, which removes the main reason people chose Freshdesk in the first place.
Prices were checked against each vendor’s own pricing page on 14 September 2026.
The best Freshdesk alternatives at a glance
Two that are still genuinely free if you self-host, one built for online shops, and one that is cheap without setup.
FreeScout
Free, self-hosted, no agent cap
Free, open sourceCrisp
Cheap, and chat-first
Free tier, then low-cost plansGorgias
Best for ecommerce
Paid, priced by ticket volumeFreeScout
The free plan Freshdesk removed
A shared-inbox helpdesk you run on cheap PHP hosting, with unlimited agents and tickets on the free core. That is the point: the thing Freshdesk used to give small teams, without a vendor who can take it away. Modules for a knowledge base, chat and time tracking are one-off purchases rather than subscriptions. Simple by design, and you own the server.
Free tier: Free tier: yes, and unusually so. Self-hosted with unlimited agents, mailboxes and tickets at no cost; paid modules add features.
Crisp
Chat, inbox and bots cheaply
Live chat, shared inbox, chatbot, knowledge base and a CRM-lite contact record, priced per workspace rather than aggressively per agent. It suits small SaaS and service businesses where most support arrives through a chat widget rather than email. Reporting is thinner than Freshdesk and it is not built for high-volume ticket queues.
Free tier: Free tier: yes, covering live chat and a shared inbox for a couple of seats.
Gorgias
Built for online shops
Purpose-built for ecommerce, with Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce integrated deeply enough that an agent can refund an order, edit an address or cancel a subscription inside the ticket. Volume pricing rather than per agent means seasonal teams are not punished for hiring. Pointless if you do not sell products online.
Free tier: Free tier: no, trial only. Plans are priced by monthly ticket volume rather than per agent.
LiveAgent
Most channels for the money
Covers email, live chat, a call centre, social channels and a customer portal at prices below the big two, and its built-in telephony is unusual at this level. The interface feels older and the AI features are behind the leaders. For a small team that genuinely needs phone support without buying a separate system, it is hard to beat on price.
Free tier: Free tier: trial only, with low-cost tiers above it.
osTicket
The old reliable
Two decades old, unglamorous, and still running support desks in universities, councils and IT departments. Custom fields, ticket filters, SLAs, canned responses and per-department routing. No chat, no social channels and no AI. If your requirement is email tickets handled reliably at zero licence cost, this does exactly that and nothing else.
Free tier: Free tier: yes. Free and open source to self-host; a hosted version is available for a fee.
Tidio
Chat plus AI for small shops
Live chat with an AI agent that handles common questions before a human sees them, aimed at small online businesses rather than support departments. Quick to install, connects to Shopify, and the free tier is usable for low volumes. It is a chat tool that grew a helpdesk, so ticket management is shallower than anything else here.
Free tier: Free tier: yes, with a monthly cap on conversations.

The free plan has gone
This is the thing to know, and almost every published round-up still has it wrong.
Freshdesk built its reputation on a free tier that covered a small team on email tickets. On its pricing page as of 14 September 2026, that plan is not there. The page shows Growth at $19 per agent a month and Pro at $55, both billed annually, with AI agent sessions and day passes as paid add-ons on top.
Those are the same two numbers Zendesk charges for Support Team and Suite Team. So the historic pitch, that Freshdesk was the cheaper one, no longer holds at the entry level.
If you came here because you were on the free plan and it ended, the two open-source options below are the direct replacements, and neither has an agent cap.
Freshdesk alternatives compared
Cheapest paid tier and what the free tier really allows, checked against each vendor’s own page on 14 September 2026.
Where the cheap options actually are now
With Freshdesk and Zendesk both starting at $19, the genuinely cheap end of this category has moved.
Self-hosted and free. FreeScout gives you unlimited agents and tickets for the price of PHP hosting. osTicket does the same with a more formal ticketing model. Neither has a per-agent charge, which is the line that grows fastest as a team scales.
Priced per workspace, not per agent. Crisp charges for the workspace rather than each person in it, which suits a five-person company where everyone occasionally answers support.
Priced by volume. Gorgias charges by monthly tickets. If you are a seasonal business, this is structurally better than per-agent billing, because a Christmas hire does not add a line item.
The question worth asking is which of those three shapes matches how your team grows. Per-agent pricing is the worst fit for a small team where support is everyone’s occasional job.
What you give up by leaving
Freshdesk earns its price in three places, and it is worth checking whether you use them.
Freddy AI. The AI agent handles first-line queries, with the first 500 sessions included on Growth and more sold in blocks. If a meaningful share of your tickets are repeat questions, that deflection has real value and only Tidio and Crisp among the options here do something comparable.
Out-of-the-box reporting. The analytics work without configuration. FreeScout and osTicket will need you to build or buy reporting.
The Freshworks suite. If you also use Freshservice or Freshsales, the shared customer record disappears when you leave.
If none of those three describe you, you were paying for a platform and using an inbox.
Migrating a helpdesk without losing history
Support history is harder to move than any other kind of business data, because it is threaded conversations with attachments rather than rows.
Freshdesk exports tickets, contacts and companies as CSV, and its API returns full conversation threads if someone writes a script. Attachments, private notes, satisfaction ratings and automation rules generally do not transfer.
The approach that works: migrate open tickets properly, archive closed tickets as a stored export rather than importing them, export your knowledge base articles separately because they carry search traffic, and rebuild automations by hand. Run both systems in parallel for a fortnight with new tickets going to the new one.
If you are considering Zendesk rather than a cheaper tool, our Zendesk alternatives guide covers that field from the other direction.
How we test and price these tools
Every price here was read from the vendor’s own pricing page in a browser on 14 September 2026, not copied from another round-up. That check is how we found that Freshdesk’s free plan is no longer listed, which most published guides have not caught up with.
For helpdesks we compare the tier that includes the channels you will actually use rather than the cheapest one on the page, and we note how each tool is priced: per agent, per workspace, or per ticket. That structure matters more than the number, because it decides what happens when your team grows.
For self-hosted options we state that the cost is hosting plus maintenance rather than zero. We read current Reddit threads for each tool, so the views here are from this year. No vendor pays for a place on this list.
Freshdesk alternatives FAQs
Taken from Google’s results and current threads on Reddit.
How we test01 Does Freshdesk still have a free plan?
Not on its current pricing page. As of 14 September 2026 the plans shown are Growth at $19 per agent a month and Pro at $55, both billed annually. If you need a free helpdesk, FreeScout and osTicket are free to self-host with no agent cap, and Crisp and Tidio have limited free tiers.
02 What is the cheapest Freshdesk alternative?
FreeScout, which is free and open source with unlimited agents and tickets; you pay only for hosting. Crisp is the cheapest hosted option because it prices per workspace rather than per agent. Both are dramatically less than $19 per person a month.
03 Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zendesk?
Not at the entry level any more. Both start at $19 per agent a month, and Freshdesk Pro and Zendesk Suite Team are both $55. Compare the specific channels and AI allowances included at each tier instead, because the headline numbers no longer separate them.
04 Which alternative is best for an online shop?
Gorgias. It integrates with Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce deeply enough that an agent can refund an order or change an address inside the ticket, and it is priced by ticket volume rather than per agent, which suits seasonal staffing.
05 Which alternatives are open source?
FreeScout for a shared-inbox helpdesk with unlimited agents, and osTicket for more formal ticketing with SLAs and department routing. Both are free to self-host. Neither includes live chat or AI, so pair them with something else if you need those.
06 Do any of these include phone support?
LiveAgent has a built-in call centre, which is unusual at its price and saves buying a separate telephony system. Freshdesk and Zendesk both sell voice as a paid add-on with per-minute charges. The open-source options have no telephony.
07 Can I move my Freshdesk tickets to another tool?
Partly. Tickets, contacts and companies export as CSV, and the API returns full conversation threads if someone scripts it. Attachments, private notes, satisfaction ratings and automation rules usually do not carry. Migrate open tickets, archive the rest as an export, and export knowledge base articles separately.
