Zendesk starts at $19 per agent a month paid yearly for Support Team, but the plan most teams actually need, Suite Team, is $55.
There is no free tier. For a small support team that is $660 per agent per year before you add AI or voice.
Prices were checked against each vendor’s own pricing page on 14 September 2026.

The value pick
The most complete helpdesk at the lowest price: ticketing, SLAs, a customer portal, a knowledge base, multichannel and a decent mobile app, for a fraction of Suite Team. It connects to Zoho CRM and Books without middleware. The interface is dense and assumes you will configure it, which is the cost of getting this much for this little.
Free tier: Free tier: yes. A free plan covering a small number of agents with email ticketing and a help centre.
Help Scout
Support that reads like a person
Built on the idea that a support reply should look like an email rather than a ticket, which changes how customers respond to it. Shared inboxes, live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, multiple knowledge bases and AI drafting are all on the entry plan. Lighter than Zendesk on workflow automation and reporting, and much faster to set up.
Free tier: Free tier: yes, with limits; Standard is $25 per user a month, about 16 per cent less billed annually.
Intercom
If AI resolution is the goal
The most aggressive on AI deflection: its agent answers customers directly and you are billed per resolution rather than per ticket touched. That model can be cheaper than paying humans, or considerably dearer, depending on how many of your queries are genuinely answerable from documentation. Model your own ticket mix before you commit, because the per-resolution charge is the whole bet.
Free tier: Free tier: no, trial only. Seats are priced monthly with AI resolutions charged separately.
Front
Email-first, for shared accounts
Sits between a shared inbox and a helpdesk, which suits teams whose support runs through addresses like orders@ or accounts@ rather than a ticket portal. Internal comments, assignment and shared drafts work well, and customers never see a ticket number. Weaker than Zendesk if you need a public knowledge base and formal SLAs.
Free tier: Free tier: no, trial only. Priced per seat with tiers by feature set.
Chatwoot
Self-host it for nothing
An open-source support platform covering live chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram in one inbox, with canned replies, automation and a help centre. Self-host it and there is no per-agent cost at all, which changes the maths entirely for a team of ten. You take on the server, the upgrades and the backups in exchange.
Free tier: Free tier: yes. Open source and free to self-host, with paid cloud plans available.
Zammad
Ticketing, properly
The more traditional open-source helpdesk: strong ticket handling, full audit history, LDAP and Active Directory integration, and granular permissions. It suits internal IT and organisations with compliance requirements rather than consumer support teams. Less polished than Chatwoot on chat channels, better on process.
Free tier: Free tier: yes. Open source and free to self-host; hosted plans are paid per agent.

What Zendesk actually costs
The headline is $19 per agent a month paid yearly. That is Support Team, and it is email ticketing, routing, prebuilt dashboards and macros.
Most teams discover they need Suite Team at $55, because that is where chat, voice, social channels and the help centre live. Above that the tiers run to $115 and beyond.
There is no free plan, only a trial. Five agents on Suite Team is $3,300 a year, and AI features and voice minutes are priced on top.
Zendesk is good software and that is a defensible price for a support operation with volume. The problem is that a five-person company with forty tickets a week is buying the same platform as an enterprise, and paying accordingly.
Zendesk alternatives compared
Cheapest paid tier and what the free tier really allows, checked against each vendor’s own page on 14 September 2026.
Zendesk or Freshdesk?
The single most searched comparison here, so it deserves a direct answer.
Freshdesk used to be the cheaper one. As of September 2026 it is not: its pricing page shows the same $19 and $55 tiers, and its free plan is gone. What it keeps is faster setup and AI agent sessions included on the entry plan.
Zendesk is deeper where depth costs money: reporting, complex routing rules, multi-brand help centres, and an app marketplace that genuinely has the integration you need.
The practical rule has changed with the pricing. Since the two now cost the same at entry level, the genuinely cheap options are elsewhere on this page: Zoho Desk, or self-hosted Chatwoot and Zammad at no per-agent cost. Choose Zendesk over Freshdesk on reporting depth and the app marketplace, not on price. Our Freshdesk alternatives guide covers that side.
Is Zendesk a CRM? And what happened to Zendesk Sell?
Two related questions that come up together.
Zendesk is a customer service platform, not a CRM. It stores customer context for support purposes: tickets, conversation history, and fields you define. It does not manage a sales pipeline, forecast revenue or run sequences.
Zendesk Sell was the CRM product, and Zendesk has steadily de-emphasised it in favour of focusing on service. If you need both sides, the common pattern is a support tool plus a separate CRM, connected. Our HubSpot alternatives guide covers the CRM half.
Zoho is the exception worth knowing: Zoho Desk and Zoho CRM share one customer record, so support agents see deals and salespeople see tickets without an integration to maintain.
Self-hosting changes the maths more here than anywhere
Support tools are priced per agent, and support teams grow. That combination makes open source unusually attractive in this category.
Ten agents on Zendesk Suite Team is $6,600 a year. Ten agents on self-hosted Chatwoot or Zammad is the cost of a server, which is a couple of hundred dollars a year, plus someone’s time.
Two honest caveats. Support is customer-facing and time-critical, so an outage is not an internal inconvenience. And migrating ticket history is the hardest part of any helpdesk move, so budget for it.
If you have infrastructure people, this is the largest saving available on this page. If you do not, a cheap hosted tool is the safer answer.
Moving without losing your ticket history
Export first, and be specific about what you are exporting.
Zendesk can export tickets, users and organisations as CSV, and its API will give you full ticket bodies and comment threads if someone writes the script. What tends to be lost in a migration is attachments, internal notes, satisfaction ratings and macros.
The pragmatic approach most teams take: migrate open tickets properly, archive closed ones as an export you keep, and rebuild macros and automations by hand rather than trying to convert them. Keep your help centre articles as a separate export, since those carry search traffic and are worth preserving carefully.
How we test and price these tools
Every price here was read from the vendor’s own pricing page in a browser on 14 September 2026, not copied from another round-up. Where a plan is annual-only at the advertised rate, we say so.
For helpdesks we compare the tier that includes the channels you will actually use, not the cheapest one on the page, because email-only plans are rarely what a team ends up on. We also note which tools price AI separately, per resolution or per credit, since that is now the fastest-growing line on a support invoice.
For self-hosted options we say plainly that the cost is server plus maintenance rather than zero. We read current Reddit threads for each tool, so the views here are from this year. No vendor pays for a place on this list.

How we test01 Is there a free version of Zendesk?
No, only a trial. Zendesk has no free plan, and its cheapest paid tier is $19 per agent a month paid yearly. For a genuinely free helpdesk, Zoho Desk has a free plan for a small number of agents, Help Scout has a limited free tier, and Chatwoot and Zammad are free to self-host.
02 Which is better, Zendesk or Freshdesk?
As of September 2026 they cost the same at entry level: both $19 per agent a month, and both $55 at the next tier. Freshdesk has dropped its free plan. Freshdesk is faster to set up and includes AI agent sessions on Growth; Zendesk is stronger on reporting, complex routing and multi-brand help centres. Price no longer separates them.
03 Is Zendesk a CRM tool?
No. It is a customer service platform that stores support context: tickets, history and custom fields. It does not manage a sales pipeline or forecast revenue. Zendesk Sell was the CRM product and has been de-emphasised. If you need both, pair a helpdesk with a CRM, or use Zoho where Desk and CRM share one record.
04 What is the cheapest Zendesk alternative?
Zoho Desk, which has a free plan for a small team and paid tiers well below Zendesk. Self-hosted Chatwoot or Zammad are cheaper still at zero per agent, if you can run a server. Help Scout Standard at $25 a user sits in between and needs no setup.
05 Which alternatives are open source?
Chatwoot for multichannel support including WhatsApp, Instagram and live chat, and Zammad for traditional ticketing with audit trails and Active Directory integration. Both are free to self-host with no per-agent cost, which is the biggest saving available in this category.
06 How does per-resolution AI pricing work?
Instead of charging per ticket your team touches, the vendor charges when its AI resolves a customer query on its own. Intercom is the clearest example. It is cheaper than a human for questions answerable from your documentation, and expensive if your queries are unusual. Check what share of your tickets are repeat questions first.
07 Can I move my ticket history out of Zendesk?
Mostly. Tickets, users and organisations export as CSV, and the API will give you full comment threads if someone scripts it. Attachments, internal notes, satisfaction ratings and macros generally do not survive. Migrate open tickets properly, archive the rest as an export, and rebuild automations by hand.
