The easiest local route

This is the simplest way to find out whether local models are good enough for what you want, and it costs nothing to try.

Purpose-built for character conversation rather than general chat, with character creation, personas and memory, running on local models by default. It is the closest thing here to the Janitor AI experience without a third party holding the conversation. What this guide does and does not cover
Worth being straightforward at the top. A large share of the searches around this topic are about removing content filters and setting up proxies to route requests through other people’s model access.
This guide does not cover either. Not out of squeamishness, but because proxy sharing generally breaks the terms of the provider whose access is being used, and because the setup guides circulating for it involve pasting API keys into places you cannot audit. People have had keys stolen and bills run up that way.
What this guide does cover is the question underneath: how to have private, flexible character conversations on infrastructure you control, at low or no cost. That turns out to be the better answer to almost every complaint anyway.
Why people look for an alternative
Janitor AI is free, so cost is not the driver. Three things are.
Reliability. Free platforms serving a lot of traffic are slow at peak times and occasionally down. When the service is the conversation, that is the whole experience.
Privacy. These are not ordinary chat logs. Companion and roleplay conversations are among the most personal text people produce, and they sit on someone else’s server under a policy that can change. Most users have never read it.
Permanence. Character sites appear and close regularly. Characters, memories and months of conversation live inside a platform, and when it shuts down they go with it.

What running a model locally actually involves
Less than people expect, and it is worth an hour to find out.
Hardware. On 16 GB of system memory, a small open-weight model runs at conversational speed on a normal laptop. A dedicated graphics card with 8 GB or more of video memory makes larger models comfortable. No graphics card at all still works, more slowly.
Setup. LM Studio is a download, a model choice and a chat window. That is genuinely it. Open WebUI with Ollama is an afternoon, and gives you a private server you can reach from your phone. SillyTavern and Backyard AI sit between the two and are built for character conversation specifically.
Cost. Zero after the download. No subscription, no per-message billing, no queue at peak times.
The honest trade. A model you run on a laptop is not as capable as the largest hosted models. It will lose track of long conversations sooner and write less vividly. Whether that matters is something you can only find out by trying it, and trying it is free.
The other side of running your own model is that you are the only one responsible for what it produces. There is no provider policy standing between you and the output, which is worth thinking about honestly rather than treating as a feature.
A note on age and on wellbeing
These platforms are built for adults, and several have tightened their rules. The other thing worth saying plainly: these conversations can become a significant part of someone’s week, and for some people they start to substitute for human contact rather than supplement it. If that describes your use, it is worth noticing. Talking to someone you trust, or a professional, is a better response than finding a platform with fewer restrictions.
