The Best Ahrefs Alternatives in 2026 (Free and Paid)
Ahrefs got expensive on you, and the meter now runs while you work. Lite climbed from $99 to $129 a month in April 2023. Unlimited lookups became credits. Extra seats cost you $40 to $100 each. There’s still no free trial of a paid plan.
So we tested and priced nine Ahrefs alternatives for you, from $0 tools to full platforms to raw data APIs. Every price below was verified in August 2026. Here’s the honest version: what each tool does better, what it can’t match, and which free options genuinely cover part of your job.
Disclosure: we use Ahrefs data for our own research, so this isn’t a hit piece. Ahrefs is still the strongest link index available. It might just be more tool than you need.
This is your most complete like-for-like swap, with stronger PPC, local and AI-visibility tooling than Ahrefs. It’s now owned by Adobe, which closed the deal on 28 April 2026.
Free tier: Free account: 10 reports a day, 1 project
From $117.33 per mo annual ($139 monthly)
02
SE Ranking
Agencies watching the budget
Core gives you 10 projects and 2,000 daily-tracked keywords for less than you’d pay for Ahrefs Lite. White-label reports and client seats are the draw if you run an agency.
Free tier: No free plan; 14-day trial, no card needed
From $103.20 per mo annual ($129 monthly)
03
Mangools
Solo SEOs and beginners
KWFinder is the friendliest keyword tool you’ll find on the market, and the SERP checker is fast. Limits are per-day lookups, not credits, so it’s easier for you to predict.
Free tier: Free plan: 5 keyword lookups a day
From $29.90 per mo annual ($49 monthly)
04
Serpstat
API access without an enterprise bill
The Team plan at $100 a month includes API access for you, which costs hundreds extra elsewhere. Keyword data outside the US and Europe is thinner.
Free tier: 7-day trial (small card verification)
From $38.50 per mo annual ($50 monthly)
05
Moz Pro
Authority metrics and link checks
Domain Authority is still the metric your clients recognise, and Link Explorer answers quick link questions free. Just know the crawler and keyword database trail Ahrefs.
Free tier: Free Link Explorer queries; 30-day trial
From $39 per mo
06
Ubersuggest
One-time cost, light usage
The lifetime licence pays for itself in about ten months compared to monthly billing. Data depth is basic, so treat what you see as directional rather than definitive.
Free tier: Free plan with a few searches a day
$29 per mo or $290 lifetime
07
DataForSEO
Raw SEO data via API
No dashboard, no seats, just endpoints for SERPs, backlinks, keywords and on-page. You pay per request instead of per month.
Free tier: Free sandbox and trial credit
Pay as you go, $50 minimum deposit
08
Similarweb
Traffic and market intelligence
It beats Ahrefs at whole-market traffic estimates, audience overlap and channel mix. Just know SEO features sit on a higher, pricier tier.
Free tier: Free tier: 5 results per metric, 1 month history
From $125 per mo annual ($199 monthly)
09
Sitebulb
Deep technical site audits
You get the best explanations of any crawler here, with prioritised hints instead of a wall of errors. It does audits only, so pair it with a keyword tool of your own.
Free tier: No free plan; 14-day trial, no card needed
From $18 per mo (desktop Lite)

Why people are leaving Ahrefs
The April 2023 price rise is probably still why you started looking. Lite went from $99 to $129 a month, Standard from $179 to $249, and Enterprise from $999 to $1,499.
The structural change mattered more to you. Unlimited lookups were replaced by credits, so most reports now draw down your monthly balance. A heavy research week costs you more than a quiet one, which makes budgeting awkward. Extra users are billed on top, at $40 to $100 per seat per month depending on plan.
There’s also no free trial of any paid tier. You pay first, then find out whether the limits fit. Ahrefs did answer the price complaints with a $29 Starter plan, launched on 2 September 2024, but it’s deliberately narrow: 200 credits a month, no add-ons, and no downgrading into it from Lite or above.
Read Reddit and Capterra threads and the same three complaints repeat: credits vanish faster than expected, seat costs blindside agencies, and $129 is hard to justify for one small site. None of that means the data is bad. Ahrefs’ link index is still the deepest around. The real question is whether you need all of it every month.

The best Ahrefs alternatives, reviewed
1. Semrush – the closest like-for-like swap
Semrush matches Ahrefs on keywords, backlinks, audits and rank tracking, then adds PPC data, local SEO and AI-visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. You’ll pay $139 a month for the SEO plan, or $117.33 billed annually.
What it lacks is Ahrefs’ link index depth and its cleaner interface. Semrush is a big, busy product. One thing to watch: Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026 and is folding it into Experience Cloud. Adobe promises continued investment for customers of all sizes, but packaging and API terms are worth re-checking at renewal.
2. SE Ranking – the agency value pick
Core runs $129 a month, or $103.20 annually, and gets you 10 projects, three-seat options one tier up, and white-label client reporting. If you’re an agency juggling small clients, the per-keyword cost is hard to beat.
The backlink index is materially smaller than Ahrefs’, so link prospecting is where you’ll feel the gap. Add-ons for AI search and agency features can push the real bill past $200 a month, so price the bundle, not the base plan.
3. Mangools – the friendliest starting point
KWFinder remains the easiest keyword tool for you to actually use, and Mangools bundles SERP analysis, rank tracking, backlinks and a site profiler for $49 a month, or $29.90 annually. Limits are daily lookups, not credits, which most people find easier to reason about.
It’s not built for enterprise work: no serious crawler, limited historical data, and a link index best used for spot checks. If you’re a solo consultant or running a single site, that’s usually fine for you.
4. Serpstat – API access on a small budget
Serpstat starts at $50 a month ($38.50 annually), and its $100 Team plan bundles API access rather than charging you separately. That single detail makes it a favourite if you’re building dashboards or bulk-checking sites.
Data quality is strongest in the US and Europe and thins out elsewhere, and the interface feels a generation behind Ahrefs. You’re buying API economics, not polish.
5. Moz Pro – authority metrics clients recognise
Moz Pro starts at $39 a month with a 30-day trial, and free Link Explorer queries answer your quick questions without a subscription. Domain Authority is still the number your non-SEO stakeholders will understand on a slide.
The keyword database and crawler don’t match Ahrefs. Pick Moz if stakeholder reporting matters more to you than index depth.
6. Ubersuggest – cheapest way to stop paying monthly
Ubersuggest is $29 a month, or $290 once for a lifetime licence on the Individual tier. If you’ll use it for more than ten months, the maths is obvious.
Depth is the trade-off you’re making. Volumes and link counts are directional rather than authoritative, so it suits side projects and light content research, not competitive link analysis.
Free Ahrefs alternatives that actually work
The free Ahrefs alternatives you’re searching for do exist, but be clear-eyed: no free stack replaces a paid platform. Free tools are strong on your own site and weak on competitors’ sites, because competitor data is the expensive part.
Here’s the honest split of what free covers for you:
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools – free for sites you verify. You get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project a month, plus Site Explorer showing up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords at a time. Best free backlink data available, for your domains only.
Google Search Console – your real clicks, impressions, positions and index coverage. No estimates, no sampling. This is the source of truth every paid tool is trying to model.
Bing Webmaster Tools – underrated, and it gives you keyword research and backlink data that isn’t restricted to verified sites in the same way.
Screaming Frog – the free edition crawls 500 URLs for you, enough to audit a small site properly. The full licence is 199 pounds a year.
Freemium tiers – Semrush allows 10 reports a day, Mangools 5 keyword lookups, Moz gives free Link Explorer queries.
Stack those and you can audit your site, track your own rankings and do basic keyword research for $0. What you can’t do is competitor backlink analysis at scale, historical trend data, or bulk keyword exports. That’s where the free Ahrefs alternatives stop and paid tools start.
Here’s practical advice: run the free stack yourself for a month first. If the only thing you keep hitting is competitor research, buy one paid tool for that job instead of a full platform.
Alternatives to the Ahrefs API
If you’re here for data rather than dashboards, compare on cost per request, not monthly sticker price.
DataForSEO is the usual answer for you. It’s pure pay as you go with a $50 minimum deposit, covering SERPs, backlinks, keywords, on-page and business data. There’s no seat cost and no subscription floor, so your low-volume project can run for a few dollars a month.
Serpstat bundles API access into its $100 Team plan, which is the cheapest way to get an API plus a working interface. Moz‘s API has the lowest entry point, from roughly $5 a month, though row costs rise quickly at volume. Semrush‘s API sits behind its Advanced plan at $549 a month, with units bought on top – powerful, but only sensible if you already need that tier.
Ahrefs’ own API requires a paid subscription and bills rows separately, which is why if you’re a heavy data user, you might keep a small Ahrefs seat for research and route bulk jobs through DataForSEO.
How to choose
You need one tool to replace everything: Semrush. It’s the only option that covers the same ground plus paid search and AI visibility.
You run an agency on tight margins: SE Ranking. Client reporting, more projects and lower per-keyword costs.
You’re a solo SEO or just starting: Mangools. Cheap, clear, and daily limits you won’t accidentally blow through.
You mainly need technical audits: Sitebulb from $18 a month, or Screaming Frog free under 500 URLs.
You want market and traffic context: Similarweb, from $125 a month annually. It answers questions about whole markets that Ahrefs doesn’t.
You’re building something: DataForSEO, and skip the interface entirely.
Your budget is zero: Ahrefs Webmaster Tools plus Google Search Console plus Screaming Frog. Revisit in three months.
Is switching worth it?
For most single-site owners like you, yes. If you’re paying $129 a month for Lite and mainly checking your own rankings and fixing technical issues, the free stack plus a $30 tool does the same job. That’s roughly $1,200 a year back in your pocket.
For agencies and link builders, it’s closer. Ahrefs’ index still finds links others miss, and its crawler is faster. Swapping to save $50 a month is a bad trade if you lose prospects because of it. Run both for one month and compare on your own client sites before committing.
Stay on Ahrefs if link building is your main revenue driver, if you need long historical data, or if your team’s workflows are built around its reports. Leave if you’re paying platform prices for occasional keyword lookups, if credits keep running out mid-month, or if seat costs make adding a junior uneconomical.
One last note: switching costs time, not just money. Budget a week to rebuild projects, rank tracking and reports before you cancel anything.
Questions
Ahrefs alternatives FAQs
The questions people actually ask on Google, Reddit and Quora — answered with what we verified this month.
There’s no single free replacement, but a stack gets close for your own site. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives free Site Audit and backlink data for domains you verify, Google Search Console gives real click and ranking data, and Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs free. What you lose is competitor research at scale, which is the part every paid tool charges for.
02 What is the cheapest Ahrefs alternative?
Ubersuggest at $29 a month, or $290 once for a lifetime licence, is your cheapest paid option with real breadth. Mangools is $29.90 a month billed annually and is better if you want keyword research. Ahrefs’ own Starter plan is also $29 a month, but it’s capped at 200 credits with no add-ons.
03 Is Semrush better than Ahrefs in 2026?
Semrush is broader; Ahrefs is deeper on backlinks. Semrush adds PPC data, local SEO and AI-visibility tracking that Ahrefs doesn’t match, while Ahrefs still has the larger link index and a cleaner interface. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, so watch for packaging changes when your renewal comes up.
04 Does Ahrefs have a free trial?
No. Ahrefs hasn’t offered a free trial of its paid plans for years, which is a common complaint. The closest options are Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, free for verified sites, or the $29 Starter plan on monthly billing. Note that you can’t downgrade from Lite or higher into Starter.
05 What are the best alternatives to the Ahrefs API?
DataForSEO works well for pure pay as you go, with a $50 minimum deposit and no subscription floor for you. Serpstat includes API access on its $100 Team plan, and Moz’s API starts from roughly $5 a month. Semrush’s API needs the $549 Advanced plan plus purchased units, so it only makes sense if you’re already on that tier.
06 Why did Ahrefs switch to credits?
Ahrefs replaced unlimited lookups with credits alongside its April 2023 price rise, so your cost now tracks usage rather than seats. Starter includes 200 credits a month and Lite 1,000 per user, while Standard and above are uncapped. Site Audit and Rank Tracker run on separate limits and don’t consume your credits.
